Speech Recognition Training Classes: What to Expect

Speech recognition training can prevent the frustration commonly associated with dictation software. There are several approaches you can take, such as personal one-on-one sessions or special programs. In this article, we will discuss online speech recognition training and how it can help to provide the accuracy you're looking for.

In general, online speech recognition training is structured like web-based class. The major difference is that you are the only student, and therefore have the undivided attention of a virtual teacher. Length of the class varies depending on the service, but could last anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours. The instructor typically begins with an introduction at the beginning of each class and then a summary at the end. Below you we have provided the basic levels of online speech recognition classes and what they entail.

Introductory Speech Recognition Training Class

With the first level of speech recognition training, you work directly with an expert who teaches the ins and outs of the technology. You learn how to dictate to your computer, correct text and more. The objective here is to build your dictating accuracy up to an acceptable level where you can at least get started. An introductory class may also consist of tips on dictation commands, training words, deleting text, undoing actions, dictating numbers, starting in Microsoft word, and saving your voice files. Some classes will provide access to downloadable content for continuous speech recognition training as well.

Intermediate Speech Recognition Training Class

This level is designed for users with some knowledge of the technology, yet still have trouble succeeding. An intermediate class will generally teach you how to start, switch between and close applications, minimize, maximum and restore applications, format text, cut, copy and paste, use the vocabulary editor, create text commands, and train your style of speech. Speech recognition training can be so efficient at the intermediate level that many students learn everything needed to be successful with their program.

Advanced Speech Recognition Training Class

When moving up to an advanced class, many instructors require that you are proficient with the Microsoft Word application. Speech recognition training at this level generally includes working with natural language commands, writing text, dictation shortcuts, learning about keystroke macros and modifying your commands. The objective of an advanced class is to significantly improve your speed and overall efficiency.

An advanced speech recognition training class may also focus on other frequently used applications, such as Microsoft Outlook where you are taught how to create text, enter email addresses, archive your messages in certain folders, and write and send messages with simple voice commands. Other classes focus on working with the Internet Explorer web browser. This type of class generally requires integration with a program such as NaturallySpeaking. Depending on the instructor, you could learn how to create text and verbal shortcuts to access your Favorites, most frequently visited websites, and so forth.

The increasing popularity of the technology has resulted in numerous speech recognition training classes and tools. As the costs ranges widely, we recommend that you shop around to find a service or personal instructor you feel the most comfortable with.
