Speech Recognition Software in Windows Vista

Speech recognition software has been available to consumers and businesses for several years. However, it's only been in the last few years that these programs have become more accurate and comprehensive enough to use on a regular basis.

There is some positive news in all of this, especially for Vista users. The new Windows operating system comes integrated with speech recognition software. Even better is the fact that the program actually works pretty well. Just like similar programs, it will take some training, but you will be able to use this amazing technology to create and edit word documents and basically command most of the primary functions on your computer.

How to Use Speech Recognition Software via Vista

In order to use the speech recognition software in Windows Vista, you will first need to spend a little time configuring the program. This includes setting up a microphone or headset, progressing through a tutorial and training the program to recognize your tone and speech pattern. To get started with the Vista speech recognition software, follow the directions below:

Step 1 - From your Control Panel, click on "Speech Recognition Options". When the "Speech Recognition Panel" opens, you will notice commands for starting the speech recognition software, configuring a microphone, initiating the tutorial, training the program, and accessing the speech reference card, a tool that can be used to help you learn commands.

Step 2 - Click on "Set up microphone" and follow the provided instructions to make sure the device is compatible with your operating system. In general, the Vista speech recognition software supports any microphone that can be plugged into your soundcard. On the other hand, you might get better results out of a microphone or headset that connects to the USB port of your computer.

Step 3 - Navigate back to the Speech Recognition Options panel and then click on "Start Speech Recognition". Upon first starting the program, it will automatically run through the setup process and tutorial. You have the option of moving along, but we strongly recommend viewing the tutorial. The first one runs for about 30 minutes, but contains some valuable information. For instance, it teaches the commands needed to use the speech recognition software and also how to train the program to recognize your voice. The tutorial can become repetitively frustrating at times, but keep in mind that the process helps it learn your voice patterns.

Step 4 - Choose "Train your computer to better understand you" from the "Speech Recognition Options" panel. From here, you will be asked to read out a long scroll of text in one of many speaking styles. This enables the computer to add your voice to its database of samples, a process that will improve recognition and reduce errors.

Step 5 - From there, the speech recognition software will ask if you want the program to scan your Documents folder. When accepting, it will add the words you most commonly use to the program database. If it isn't sure about certain words, it will recommend other words based on how often they are used in your documents.

After setting up the speech recognition software, you are on your way to easy living. We recommend starting out in a quiet place. For one, you want only your voice to be registered when training the software. In addition, other people may find you unnerving when they see you carrying on a conversation with your computer.
